JOEL ASH - SOUNDTRACK

BIOGRAPHY

Through a natural fascination with the art medium of audio, Joel developed an intrinsic understanding of what makes for an effective piece of music. Ever since a young age, he'd wake up religiously on weekend mornings, pen and paper ready, documenting the positions of songs on the pop charts. Comparing them week by week was one of his greatest joys. Growing older, Joel studied Film and Television full-time, before switching to Music Performance. At seventeen, he dove headfirst into the local music scene, playing guitar for one band, and leading vocals in another. Both were bands of entirely different genres, Joel never restricting himself. Over time, and out of necessity, Joel developed a proficiency in self-recording, in order to produce his ideas the moment they were conceived. After some time playing in various local bands, Joel was asked to join the line up of local heavy band Impaler. The efficient and organic nature of Joel's recording process informed the melodic and rhythmic content of the musical chaos concocted in writing sessions with the band's bassist. He'd obsessively craft ominous and brooding soundscapes, to imbue the crushing metal sound with an affecting sense of bleakness. During Joel's time with Impaler, he engineered and recorded an EP and two singles for two other local bands, furthering his drive and ambition in the field of sound engineering. He was developing an idea: to run a local studio offering great, affordable rates for high quality audio mixes/masters, to help revitalise the local music scene. In 2016, Joel started writing for a new and epic musical project, intended to be all-encompasssing in its cinematic nature, with no restriction in genre or sound. He began drawing greater inspiration from jazz, hip-hop, blues, funk, classical, ambient/elevator muzak, to broaden his horizons. After overwhelming positive feedback, and some great inspiration from his father, Joel resolved to expand his musical output to other mediums. At twenty-five, he's about to open a recording studio and custom audio production facility. He places an emphasis on producing unique, diverse, and highly-effective self-composed musical works of any kind, for any purpose.

MISSION STATEMENT

My goal with 'The Light' is to accentuate the tone of the film at every twist and turn, and to provide an undercurrent of emotional content that communicates deeply without words. I'm looking to immerse the viewer completely, in an expansive sonic universe that's both familiar and peculiar, secure and unsure, inspiring and at times burdening, comforting, and at times unsettling. The aim's to construct an all-encompassing ambient entity that seems to convey the restless pace of our daily chaos, and represent its contrast with the irrepressible human spirit of hopefulness. An entity that seems to understand the nuances and subtleties of our relationships and interactions; that appears to reach out and connect with the viewer in a  completely intangible, but all-too-real way. With a wide array of sounds, textures and skills at my disposal, I'll be crafting careful and dynamic musical motifs to accentuate the experience, and emotive melodic moments to strengthen the bond between the viewer and the characters. I'm extremely excited to realise our collective vision for 'The Light' by embracing this role and continuing my own personal labour-of-love for sound design, helping to bring the full potential of this spirited, soulful film to life.
